Governor Signature Needed for MFL Improvement Bill to Become Law

After four years of work, we’re close to seeing new legislation passed. Assembly Bill 909 was passed out of Committee on February 9 on a 12 to 2 vote. It was then approved by the full Assembly before it adjourned.

A hearing on companion Senate Bill 913 was held by the Senate Committee on Insurance, Licensing and Forestry on February 23, with WAFO submitting testimony in support. The Committee subsequently voted the bill out of Committee on a 5 to 0 vote. On March 8 (the last day of session), Senate suspended the rules and concurred with Assembly Bill 909.

What can you do now? Consider contacting Governor Evers and ask him to “Call
for AB 909” with his signature. Please also send thanks to Representative
Jeff Mursau
and Senator Mary Felzkowski, who did an outstanding job moving this
bill through the legislature before it adjourned.

We have had terrific support from WAFO members who have contacted their legislators and volunteered their time to testify. We’re almost there… contact Gov. Evers to help get this bill passed!

Property Tax Corrections Needed Before “Open Book” Ends

Do you understand how your land is differentially taxed? Tax rates differ based on the land classification. It is not uncommon for landowners to save thousands of dollars by taking actions to correct errors on how their land is classified and taxed.

If you have questions or discover problems, you can get them corrected by contacting your assessor at any time. However, to be effective for this year, problems must completed before the “open book” period ends this May or June. See the Open Book Calendar.

WAFO’s educational tool, “Landowners Guide to Understanding Your Property Tax Bill,” will help you determine if your land is correctly classified. Click this link to create a free user account and to access.

WAFO Needs Your Help to Continue

WAFO is the only Wisconsin organization that is registered to lobby on behalf of private woodland owners. We need your support to continue working with our legislators and state agencies as they develop new legislation and policies.

Please consider making a contribution. Let your neighbors know about us, too! We’ll need everyone’s help to allow us to continue to advocate on behalf of private woodland owners.
