Bills to Update the Managed Forest Law Lanquish

Assembly Bill AB700 and its companion SB 543 were introduced in the last legislative session but failed to pass before the legislature adjourned for the year. It is expected that work will continue on making changes to the MFL when the legislature returns in January 2015. In the Assembly a hearing was held, amendments proposed and the bill was passed out of committee but did not receive a full assembly vote. On the Senate side, a hearing was held but again the bill died as the legislature adjourned for the year. This comprehensive bill was developed in cooperation with the Council on Forestry. WAFO supported many elements of the bill and was pleased to see that the legislature made significant effort to start addressing problems. Some important changes WAFO had proposed were not included in the bill but it nonetheless  serves as a starting point for future changes.
